What Does Brake Repair Mean?

The brake system is the most important system on your vehicle. Improperly functioning brakes can and do cause accidents. A properly maintained brake system allows the driver to maintain full control of the vehicle. The modern automotive brake system has been refined for over 100 years and has become extremely dependable and efficient.

The typical brake system consists of disc brakes in the front and either disc or drum brakes in the rear connected by a system of tubes and hoses that link the brake at each wheel to the master cylinder.  Other systems that are connected to the brake system include the parking brakes, power brake booster and the anti-lock system. When the brakes are applied, heat builds up in the system due to the friction between the brake pads and/or shoes and the brake rotor or brake drum.

When should I have work done to my brakes?

Since this is a detailed repair, we have listed the questions you should ask before having anyone repair your brake system.

1) Does the shop perform a complete inspection and provide you with the inspection results? Just looking at the source of the noise and not inspecting the entire system can be cause for concern.

2) In what condition is the brake fluid? The brake fluid on most cars should be flushed every other year and more often in damp climates due to it's unique ability to attract and absorb moisture. Moisture laden brake fluid can boil, causing mushy brakes and possible loss of control.

3) Are the parts to be used as good as, or better than, the parts your car came with? Some cars come with special brake pads. Installing anything other than what the vehicle came with can greatly affect brake performance.

4) Are the technicians properly trained and certified to perform this service?

5) Does the job come with a warranty?

Why Choose DSG for your Brake Service?

Servicing the brake system is one of the least understood systems for the vehicle owner. Many people think replacing brakes can be done by almost any shop as a minor repair, when in fact an improperly performed brake job can cost more in the long run. Antilock brake systems and the traction control system work in conjunction with the brake system so when the brakes aren't working properly those systems may not work properly either.

Focusing on these important considerations can assure getting the most important system on your car properly maintained.
